SMBI and Redland Bay Transport and Parking Residents Group
Rationale
The ferry terminals are the gateways between SMBI and the mainland. Water transport is the only way of travelling between the islands and the mainland. High population growth on the islands means that the ferry terminals are frequently choke points, with crowding on ferries and demand for car parking spaces exceeding supply.
The lack of public transport on the islands means most islanders are dependent on a car to get to the ferry, exacerbating demand for parking at island ferry terminals.
Scope
The purpose of the advisory group is to work with Cr Shane Rendalls to develop ideas, advice and policy recommendations in respect to:
-
- Mainland public transport
-
- Parking capacity at ferry terminals
-
- Sea-based transport – barges and ferries
-
- Enablers for alternative transport – bikes, scooters, car share, etc
-
- Strategies to improve parking and traffic flow
-
- Access for people with mobility needs
-
- Timing of parking spaces on islands and mainland
-
- Transparency and timeliness of project and information reporting
-
- Island transport
Out of scope
While overall parking capacity is important and we support the actions of community groups speaking out on transport needs, this resident group is not an action or lobby group.
Frequency of meetings
Online meetings will be 60-90 minutes every 6-8 weeks, shifting to quarterly .
The duration of the group will be up to 2 years.
Membership of the resident group
The group comprises a cross- section of island and mainland residents with differing needs, such as frequency of travel, modes of land transportation and mobility requirements.
