Who hasn’t heard that before?
My goal and commitment for the mainland parking solution is to allow for more freedom in our comings and goings.
We should work to unite families, friends and services so that nobody is left behind. Just because we live on the islands, doesn’t mean we’re prisoners or shouldn’t have access to mainland opportunities.
Living the nightmare…
I recognise and share the pain we’re all going through, compounded by the rising cost of living and the extra challenges of parking and using mainland transport. That’s why working together for measurable outcomes will give us a better chance to get what we need.
To make our parking and transport nightmare go away, I will:
- DO THINGS WITH, NOT TO, OUR COMMUNITY
- FORM A PARKING AND TRANSPORT GROUP to work with me throughout my term in Council. Together we will develop practical recommendations and strategies to improve mainland and island parking AND transport within the community.
- VOTE ‘NO’ TO PAID PARKING REPLACING FREE PARKING
- DECLINE A COUNCIL CAR. I cannot in good conscience accept a car and parking while island residents are forced to go without. I will use public transport and car-share.
- VOTE ‘NO’ TO MAYOR AND COUNCILLOR SALARY INCREASES. Councillors and the Mayor can vote themselves a 3% increase in July 2024. I believe these funds could be better used in the community for more urgent needs.
I’m hearing you…
If elected, I’ll be pushing Council for:
1. 24/7 security patrols and rapid police response to address the immediate problem of crime and vandalism.
2. Audit of existing car-park usage to inform planning the best way forward.
3. Faster delivery of the Weinam Creek Priority Development Area (PDA) project to ensure that the community-approved precinct design:
a. Allocates and delivers 2200+ free car spaces to replace those already lost
b. Supports future expansion
c. Increases car-share spaces with infrastructure for future electrification, leased-back to the provider and is excluded from the public parking count
d. Improves our foreshore environment
e. Allows no parking offsets for commercial, professional or residential developments. Their parking spaces MUST be in addition to the 2200+ public parking spaces
f. Takes disability access and parking into account to meet commuter needs
g. Expands the kiss-and-drop zone to allow drivers to safely drop passengers and luggage at the ferry terminal before parking
h. Includes storage facility for leaving trolleys and baggage unattended while parking
i. Provides secure bicycle lockers to encourage commuters to use alternatives to driving.
4. No parking offsets for medium-density developments in the Weinam Creek area because of proximity to a transport hub – they do this!
5. A ‘Park-and-Ride’ solution, in addition to the 2200+ free spaces already committed, through my continued lobbying of State government.
6. Secure long-term parking facility that is affordable to all residents and serviced by a regular shuttle.
7. Better shopping experiences, by working with businesses, local and state government to implement a reliable shopper-bus running from the ferry to Redland Bay and Victoria Point shops, designed for commuters with trolleys, mobility scooters and pets, etc.
8. Walking and cycle ways to provide a safe and pleasant connection between key community and retail spaces and where people live.
9. New deepwater trailerboat facility, South of Weinam Creek, to improve access to the waterways for residents and visitors, while also relieving parking demand at Weinam Creek.
This approach builds on the strategies for mainland and island transport I’ve already discussed and presented:
