At the general meeting 17 October I will be moving a motion that Council resolves as follows:
1) To implement a moratorium on the removal of the following built infrastructure on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands:
a) Toilet block, Waterside Drive, Macleay Island
b) Toilet Block, The Esplanade, Karragarra Island
c) Storage shed (old cricket club) Jackson Oval, Russell Island
2) To request advice on alternative use and timeframe for development of the site.
3) Where no immediate alternative use is planned, to seek advice on ‘‘as is” expression of interest to gauge interest from the community (not for profit and commercial) for use of the facility.
I will also be proposing that this applies to all city assets.
Background
There is a shortage of community and commercial infrastructure on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands. The recent demolition of the old toilet block at 1-5 Alison Crescent, Russell Island with no planned future use has created serious concern in the community from community groups and businesses.
There is the option for Council to issue an expression of interest for the use of these facilities “as is”, noting that any future lessee will have to comply with any condition on future use, as per any other building.
